Given the film was not released until December 1969 the jacket (containing stills from the film) could not have been produced earlier than 1969. As such all copies found with this artwork were bound using older, leftover sets of pages. Why there were enough leftover sets of pages to avoid having to do a new print run for the movie tie in edition is a bit of a mystery. If anyone can shed light on this please get in touch.
Collectors notes
There has been some speculation as to whether there are two variants of this cover, one where the Ian Fleming on the spine is in red and another in yellow. Having access to a large number of copies at the same time its obvious this is in fact sun fading and the Ian Fleming prior to fading is the same colour as used for “The New James Bond” on the cover.
The three printings have identical covers / pricing and no variants have been found other than that some copies were printed in Australia rather than the UK (see above). The 5th printing seems less common than the 4th or 6th.
